Maritime freight rate updates

14 January 2025

We inform you of some important updates regarding maritime shipping costs starting from 2025.

The European Union is implementing a series of measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the maritime sector. These provisions have and will continue to have a direct impact on transportation costs, as maritime carriers will be required to bear new burdens. In particular:

  • Increased ETS: The European Union Emissions Trading System (ETS) is being extended to 70% of maritime sector emissions starting from 2025, compared to 40% in 2024. This means an increase in costs related to CO2 emissions, which will inevitably be reflected in shipping rates.
  • New FuelEU surcharge: As part of the European Commission's Fit for 55 legislative package, a new regulation, called FuelEU, has been introduced, requiring maritime carriers to reduce the emission intensity of the fuels used in their ships. This measure will also lead to an increase in transportation costs.

In the spirit of transparency, we at D.B. Group will continue to charge separately for cost items that are not directly under our control.

What can you do?

We recommend:

  • Planning in advance: By anticipating your transportation needs, you can negotiate the best conditions and mitigate the impact of new costs.
  • Evaluating alternatives: It may be advisable to explore and evaluate the possibility of offsetting emissions with green products available on the market.

We are at your complete disposal to provide you with more details and answer any questions.
